Slimming down your favorite recipes is an easy way to enjoy your favorite dishes and not over load on calories. There are healthy ways to slim down your favorite recipes that will have you ready for spring break season in no time.

Make a healthy substitution – By substituting some of the fatty ingredients in your recipes with healthier options, you end up reducing the calories up to 50%! By simply substituting applesauce in some of your recipes for oil you can eliminate calories without losing flavor and texture. Replacing certain ingredients can also boost the nutritional content in your recipes too! For a printable and downloadable “Healthy Cooking and Substitutions” chart click here.

Change cooking techniques – Healthy cooking techniques can capture the flavor and nutrients of your food without adding excessive amounts of fat, oil or salt. Healthy cooking techniques include braising, broiling, poaching, grilling, sautéing and also steaming your food. Also try to use nonstick dishes to eliminate the need for greasing the pan!

Cut back on certain ingredients – Try and cut fatty condiments from your diet and replace them with healthier alternatives. Instead of fattening mayonnaise opt for mustard, instead of syrup use fruit preserves, and don’t put that pad of butter on your slice of toasted banana bread. If you must use some mayonnaise try to use the fat-free alternative or use sugar-free syrup in stead of regular.

Downsize the portion size – It doesn’t matter how much you reduce or omit ingredients, some recipes are higher in sugar or fat. You can still help your waistline by cutting your portion size. When eating make sure take your time, not only do you want to enjoy your food but it takes the body 20 minutes to register you are full. Portion sizes are HUGE today compared to decades ago. Help yourself by using smaller plates, utensils, and even measuring your food.
